Chapter 17
For the first time in weeks, classes felt somewhat normal. I made it through the day without embarrassing myself with my inability to control my magic, and I even made progress with the Earth group in the grove of trees. I was pretty confident we were going to save most of them.
So when I saw Hannahâs teary eyes and the stern expressions on the faces of my friends and the guys, I almost walked out of the dining hall without eating.
One day. I just wanted one day without problems. Was that too much? Apparently.
I sat down with my tray of chicken tenders, but my appetite was quickly fading. âWhat happened?â
Hannah wiped her eyes and leaned into Daniel. âPeople are just being mean.â
Who would be mean to her and why? Everyone liked Hannah. Granted, I mostly kept to our small group since arriving, even so, I saw how people treated her in class.
Sai was the first to jump in. âThereâs talk going around. The Council issued a statement yesterday, cautioning against interspecies breeding. It was nothing new, but itâs brought out the prejudices all over again.â
I could feel eyes on our table, and I glanced over my shoulder and into several pairs of staring eyes. I glared back before turning around. âSo our group of misfits is drawing attention?â
âYou could say that,â Daniel narrowed his eyes and pulled Hannah even closer.
âPeople have been whispering and staring all day,â Malik explained. âSomeone called Hannah names and . . .â
âAnd?â I demanded.
âAnd you,â Theo finished. âPeople have noticed you spending time with us. They canât figure out who youâre with, so theyâre calling you names.â
A bunch of strangersâ opinions didnât matter to me, but I hated that Hannah was taking it personally.
âYou canât listen to them, Hannah.â
She sniffed. âItâs not what theyâre saying. Iâm scared.â
I straightened. âOf what?â
âOf the Councilmember finding out about me and Daniel. Or you guys. Iâm scared heâll do something to keep us apart.â
âItâs not officially against the law, right? Itâs just frowned upon?â I couldnât remember if anyone had ever told me.
âNo, there wasnât enough support within the Council to pass the law. But that was back before our parents were in school. They could try again. Theo looked even more stressed than heâd been after telling us about the meeting with George.
âShifter slut,â a girl muttered as she passed our table.
I snapped my head in her direction. âExcuse me?â
She glared at me then Hannah. âShe knows what she is.â
âHow dare you.â I started to stand, but Theo pulled me back down.
âWe canât make a scene.â
âYeah, just let it go,â Hannah said with a sigh. âItâs not worth getting in trouble. Plus, most teachers would take her side.â
This whole situation was ridiculous. Completely unbelievable. How could there still be segregation in the supernatural society?
âThe best thing to do right now is to keep our heads down and stay out of trouble. As long as we donât draw attention to ourselves, the Councilmember wonât have reason to look twice.
